Register of Practicing Registered Nurses
Apply for this register in order to practice as a registered nurse in Manitoba. Only registrants on this register are entitled to practice as a registered nurse and use the designation of Registered Nurse, RN, or any other derivative.
Each member on the register of practicing registered nurses is entitled to:
- Engage in the practice of nursing, subject to any restrictions or conditions placed on the member by CRNM;
- Receive professional liability protection with the Canadian Nurses Protective Society (CNPS);
- Hold office on the Board of Directors if elected;
- Serve as an appointed member on any committees of the College;
- Attend, participate, and vote at meetings of the College in accordance with CRNM bylaws; and
- Receive official CRNM publications such as the Manitoba RN Journal.
Register of Registered Nurses (Extended Practice)
Registered nurses on the extended practice register are entitled to use the designation Registered Nurse (Extended Practice) or RN(EP). This designation signifies that the RN has completed advanced education (or has substantially equivalent education and experience) and has passed an approved examination demonstrating extended practice competencies. In addition to the services (scope of practice) a Registered Nurse can already provide, an RN(EP) can independently prescribe medications, order and manage the results of screening and diagnostic tests, and perform minor surgical and invasive procedures. The Extended Practice Regulation outlines the specific services in greater detail.
Each member on the extended practice register is entitled to:
- Engage in extended practice registered nursing, subject to any restrictions or conditions placed on the member by CRNM;
- Receive professional liability protection with the Canadian Nurses Protective Society (CNPS);
- Hold office on the Board of Directors if elected;
- Serve as an appointed member on any committees of the College;
- Attend, participate, and vote at meetings of the College in accordance with CRNM bylaws; and
- Receive official CRNM publications such as the Manitoba RN Journal.
Register of Non-Practicing Members
Members who are not actively practicing and who do not plan to practice as a registered nurse may opt to register on the register of non-practicing members. Apply for this register if you will not be engaging in the practice of registered nursing but want to participate in and vote at meetings of CRNM, participate in certain committees and receive copies of official CRNM publications.
Each member on the register of non-practicing members is entitled to:
- Attend, participate, and vote at meetings of the College in accordance with CRNM bylaws;
- Serve as a member on certain committees of the College, but not be eligible for election to the Board of Directors; and
- Receive official CRNM publications such as the Manitoba RN Journal.
Non-practicing members:
- Are not authorized to practice as a registered nurse or use the title Registered Nurse, RN, or any other derivative;
- May not claim practice hours in Manitoba;
- Do not hold professional liability protection with CNPS.
Important: In the future, if you wish to change to the register of practicing registered nurses, you will have to apply to convert your registration status. At that time, you should contact CRNM registration services to review your particular circumstances, and discuss the requirements for conversion of your registration to the register of practicing registered nurses.
Register of Graduate Nurses
The Graduate Nurse Register is an interim step for those who meet all of the requirements for registration as a registered nurse except for passing the registration exam. In order to apply for registration as a Graduate Nurse, you must have been approved to write the next available sitting of the examination or have written the exam and are awaiting results. You may also apply for this register if you are currently registered in another Canadian province or territory and wish to engage in the practice of nursing in Manitoba while waiting for CRNM to receive verification of registration and practice hours. Please note that fees are for 4 month periods.
A member whose name is on the register of graduate nurses is entitled to:
- Engage in the practice of nursing, subject to any restrictions or conditions placed on the member by CRNM;
- Receive professional liability protection with the Canadian Nurses Protective Society (CNPS);
- Serve as an appointed member on any committees of the College;
- Attend and participate in meetings of the College; and
- Receive copies of official college publications such as the Manitoba RN Journal.
A graduate nurse:
- Is not eligible for election to the board;
- May not vote at meetings of the College; or
- May not be the chairperson of a committee of the College.
