Fall 2009 Employer Bulletin

Registration Renewal Season Now Underway

Recent registrants and those who renewed online last year should have received a postcard from the College and an email reminder in mid-September regarding registration renewal. Others should have received a paper renewal package in mid-September.

Online Registration Renewal Open for Business
The College’s online renewal system has been modified to streamline the online renewal process which is the quickest, easiest and cheapest method of renewal for members. Online renewal applications can be completed in less than ten minutes, members receive instant email notification that we have received their application and they save the cost of a stamp. To access the online renewal system, visit www.crnm.mb.ca and click on the online registration renewal link on the home page. Members will need their CRNM registration number to log-in and access their renewal form.

Registration Renewal Applications Subject to Late Fee After
November 15

Encourage your RNs to renew early. A late fee automatically applies to any registration renewal application received after November 15, 2009. The $50.00 late penalty (plus GST) is in addition to the registration renewal fee payable by the member. A certificate of practice will not be issued until all fees are paid.

Online Employer Verification

The College’s online employer verification service enables employers to receive an instant report about the registration status of the RNs they employ which can be printed or saved. The online verification service is available free of charge to all employers of RNs, GNs and RN(EP)s. Employers can inquire about one or more RNs by manually entering their first or last name and CRNM registration number or they can upload a text file containing the same information about all of the RNs they employ. Employers can take advantage of this service as often as they wish.

Employers are required under the Registered Nurses Act to verify the registration status of the RNs they employ at least annually. Failure to do so may result in penalties provided under the Act. This requirement is another safeguard which protects the public. Employers should also make sure to check the registration status of registered nurses returning to work following a leave of absence.

Employers must register with the College to receive a username and password for system access. For more information visit our website or to register please contact the College's Registration Services staff at (204) 784-5181 or registration@crnm.mb.ca

College H1N1 Preparation

Providing registered nurses with professional practice support and ensuring a process for temporary emergency registration are two of the priorities addressed in the College’s pandemic plan. For further details about the College’s preparations for the H1N1 pandemic read this month’s Ask a Practice Consultant article in the Manitoba RN Journal.

Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners Wanted for H1N1 Flu Clinics

To help protect Manitobans from H1N1 flu, immunization clinics are being organized across the province. The clinics will begin when the vaccine is available. Currently registered RNs and RN(EP)s or NPs, as well as those who are retired, are needed to work at these clinics. People who have experience working in immunization clinics are required to provide shots, greet visitors or assist with registration.

Register Today
If you can help, please contact Manitoba Health immediately so you can be matched with a clinic in your area. To register, please call 1-866-799-0174 or email calltoaction@gov.mb.ca

You can help spread the word about this call to action by downloading and displaying this poster on staff bulletin boards in your facility.

Continuing Competence Requirements Need to be Met Annually

Each year, RNs and RN(EP)s renewing registration on a practicing register are required to meet the College’s continuing competence requirements. The requirements of the Continuing Competence Program include:
  1. A completed self-assessment, identifying at least one indicator as a strength and one indicator as an area for self-development for each of the 5 Standards of Practice for Registered Nurses,
  2. A completed self-development plan, which includes the following 3 components:
    1. identification of a learning goal,
    2. documentation of learning/professional development activities, and
    3. evaluation of impact of learning/professional development activities on nursing practice.
  3. Meeting the minimum of 1,125 total nursing practice hours over the past 5 years.
Requirements for RN(EP)s are slightly different and can be found on our website.

To assist RNs in documenting their continuing competence, the forms for the program are available from the College website.

All RNs are reminded that continuing competence documentation should be kept for at least five years. About 5% of members are selected annually to participate in our continuing competence compliance audit.

For more information about the continuing competence program, contact Suzanne Wowchuk RN, Consultant, Nursing Practice, at (204) 774-3477 ext. 467 or toll-free in Manitoba (800) 665-2027 ext. 467 or by email at swowchuk@crnm.mb.ca

PREP: The Practitioner Remediation and Enhancement Partnership

A Program Promoting Enhanced Clinical Competency and Decreased Risks to Patient Safety
Occasionally we encounter a situation where an employer is concerned about the competence of an individual registered nurse and the risks to patient safety. The RN has demonstrated some lack of knowledge, skill or judgment but not to the level that would precipitate other action (termination). The College has developed the PREP program (Practitioner Remediation and Enhancement Partnership) as a voluntary alternative to traditional remediation for a registered nurse whose competency may be impaired because of a deficit in knowledge, skills, attitude or judgment. The goal of PREP is patient safety by improving the nurse’s practice to a safe, competent level.

PREP is a positive non-punitive approach. PREP promotes patient safety by encouraging open reporting as an alternate to punitive action with the goal of remediating the practitioner. The goal is to correct problems and improve practice rather than blaming the individual. Nurses have been more likely to volunteer to participate in a program for remediation and improving their practice if it is non-punitive. PREP improves health care by establishing constructive linkages between total quality improvement initiatives and the College. PREP is a partnership between the employer, the registered nurse and the College.

Once referred to the PREP program a competence assessment is usually done to pinpoint the areas needing remediation. A plan is then developed in collaboration with the College, the registered nurse and the employer. If you would like to find out more about the PREP program or discuss a possible referral please contact: Peggy Martens RN BN MN, Nursing Practice Consultant, at 784-5189, (800) 665-2027 ext. 189 or email pmartens@crnm.mb.ca
