New Website to Launch Next Month

Work has been underway throughout the summer on a redesign of the College’s website. The new site will launch in September, in time for registration renewal. If you are renewing your registration online we invite you to take a few minutes and check out the new site and send us your feedback. The website exists to support you in your nursing practice and it’s important for us to know how well we are doing with that goal. There will be a link to a survey on the front page of the site so you can let us know how we are doing. Your feedback is important and helps us ensure we remain relevant as an information and support resource for you. Keep an eye on the website for the launch of the new site next month.

Specialty Practice Groups

The new College website will include a listing of Manitoba specialty practice groups and nursing interest groups. We are currently compiling a list of groups to be included on the page. If you are part of the executive of a specialty practice group, have never been contacted by the College for information about your group and would like to be included in the website listing, please contact Melva Nordquist at mnordquist@crnm.mb.ca or call toll free in Manitoba (800) 665-2027 ext. 235 or in Winnipeg 774-3477 ext. 235.

Registration Renewal Starts in September

Watch your mailbox or your email inbox for registration renewal information next month. If you are a new registrant or renewed online last year, you’ll receive an email with a link to the online renewal form along with information about the 2009 renewal. Everyone else will receive information through the mail about the same time. If your email address or postal address have changed within the past 12 months please ensure you have reported it to the College so we are sending the information to the correct address. Outdated addresses cost both time and money and result in delays in you receiving your renewal information. Report address changes via email to registration@crnm.mb.ca Simply tell us your name, registration number and what your old and new address information is.

Partners in Patient Safety - A Lunch and Learn Session

The College is partnering with Health Canada and the Manitoba Institute for Patient Safety to kick off Patient Safety Week with a special Lunch and Learn session for all registered nurses. Join us on Monday, September 29 between 1130 and 1300 hours at the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba, 890 Pembina Highway in Winnipeg as we share ways you can improve patient safety in your practice setting. The session will feature presentations by the Canada Vigilance Program - Health Canada's post-market surveillance program that collects and assesses reports of suspected adverse reactions to health products marketed in Canada. Registered nurses occupy a pivotal position in adverse reaction reporting. You'll learn how the Vigilance Program provides a variety of tools for health professionals to report suspected adverse reactions simply and easily.

The Manitoba Institute for Patient Safety (MIPS) is an invaluable resource for health professionals and the public. You'll get an overview of MIPS and hear about a number of important initiatives you can take part in to enhance patient safety in your practice setting. The College is proud to be a premier member of MIPS and encourages all registered nurses to inform themselves about the resources MIPS makes available to RNs and other health professionals.

Space is limited for this Lunch & Learn session and lunch will be provided. Please register at least one week in advance by contacting Melva Nordquist, Administrative Coordinator for Nursing Practice by email at mnordquist@crnm.mb.ca or call toll free in Manitoba (800) 665-2027 ext. 235 or in Winnipeg 774-3477 ext. 235. There is no cost to register.

Upcoming Professional Practice Series Sessions

  • Wednesday, September 10, 2008 - Preceptoring and Mentoring
Preceptoring and mentoring are powerful mechanisms for students, recent graduate nurses or nurses new to a particular area of nursing to gain clinical knowledge and benefit from the experiences of more senior nurses. Having a positive preceptoring or mentoring experience has been shown to impact workplace satisfaction and retention of new nurses and has significant benefits for the senior nurse as well. The reality of today’s workplace with staffing levels and increased patient acuity leaves nurses little time to take on preceptoring or mentoring new nurses. This presentation will address the issues of mentorship and preceptorship in nursing, the benefits and the costs, and begin a discussion of creating a workplace culture that supports and nurtures preceptorship and mentorship in nursing. Presented by Peggy Martens RN BN MN, Consultant, Nursing Practice
  • Wednesday, October 1, 2008 - Legal Risks in Nursing
Two sessions 1300 -1430 or 1900 - 2030. Guest Speaker: Ethyllynn Phillips RN BA LLB, Professional Liability Officer, Canadian Nurses Protective Society.

It is intended for nurses in all contexts and domains of nursing practice at all levels of decision making. It is developed by nurses for nurses and can assist nurses in practicing ethically and working through ethical challenges that arise in their practice with individuals, families, communities and public health systems. The CNA Code of Ethics has been revised and was launched at the CNA Biennial Convention in Ottawa in June 2008. Come and learn about the changes to the Code of Ethics and how it may be applied to your practice setting. Presented by Joanne Winsor RN BN MN, Consultant, Nursing Practice
