2008 Professional Practice Series

  • January 9, 2008 - Evidence Based Practice
Keeping up to date with best practice information can be a challenge. This presentation will explore the characteristics of evidence based practice and discuss strategies for incorporating it into everyday practice. Participants will gain an increased awareness of resources for best practice information. Presented by Suzanne Wowchuk, Consultant, Nursing Practice
  • February 13, 2008 - Complaints & Investigation Process
The complaints investigation discipline process presentation will be of interest for any registered nurse but may be particularly helpful to individuals in leadership positions. The discussion will include how to lodge a complaint, what steps occur during the complaints process, monitoring of complaints and the responsibilities of registered nurses and employers. Participants will be provided with opportunity for questions. Presented by Deb Elias, Manager, Complaints Resolution
  • March 5, 2008 - Is my Practice Registered Nurse Practice?
Determining what work or practice constitutes registered nursing practice in Manitoba involves evaluating the specific practice in question in the context of the Registered Nurses Act and the Standards of Practice for Registered Nurses. This session will explore how CRNM determines whether a particular practice may be included as the practice of registered nursing, taking into account whether the particular practice is grounded in the competencies gained in basic nursing education programs and expanded through post-basic health-related education programs and whether the practice in question is currently considered to be best-practice and evidence-based. Presented by Suzanne Wowchuk, Consultant, Nursing Practice
All sessions take place from 1400 - 1530 hours in the CRNM boardroom, 890 Pembina Hwy. There is no cost to register. Please register at least one week in advance by contacting Melva Nordquist, Administrative Coordinator for Nursing Practice by email at mnordquist@crnm.mb.ca or call toll free in Manitoba (800) 665-2027 ext. 235 or in Winnipeg 774-3477 Ext. 235. If you live outside of Winnipeg you can register to join us via telephone. Education materials can be emailed to you ahead of time.

First Phase of 2007 Continuing Competence Audit Wrapping Up

As most of you now know, the continuing competence audit has shifted to coincide with registration renewal. As a result, the data collection phase of the audit is now wrapping up for another year. Following the review of the audit materials and an analysis of the results, we will share what we have learned and observed. On behalf of all of our staff involved in conducting the audit we wish to thank audited members and their employers for their cooperation in completing the required audit materials and forms and returning them promptly to the College. Your help is appreciated in assisting with this important task. Thank you!

Late Fee and Unauthorized Practice Penalty

A $50.00 late penalty (plus GST) is now in effect on all registration renewal applications. This penalty is in addition to the registration renewal fee payable by the member. A certificate of practice will not be issued until all fees are paid.

Please note that an unauthorized practice penalty will be imposed on registration applications where a member has failed to renew by December 31 and practiced nursing in violation of the RN Act. The penalty is $500 (plus GST) and is over and above the practicing registration fee. It applies for any calendar year, or part year, when a person practiced in Manitoba while not registered to practice nursing. This penalty is in addition to sanctions provided under the Registered Nurses Act, Regulations and CRNM policies.
