Late Fee and Unauthorized Practice Penalty

A late fee of $50.00 (plus GST) is now in effect on all registration renewal applications. This fee is in addition to the registration renewal fee payable by the member. A certificate of practice will not be issued until all fees are paid. Renew today. Online renewal is available via the College website at www.crnm.mb.ca

Please note that an unauthorized practice penalty will be imposed where a member has failed to renew by December 31 and practiced nursing in violation of the RN Act. The penalty is $500 (plus GST) and is over and above the practicing registration fee. It applies for any calendar year, or part year, when a person practiced in Manitoba while not registered to practice nursing. This penalty is in addition to sanctions provided under the Registered Nurses Act, Regulations and CRNM policies.

Upcoming Professional Practice Series Sessions

1300-1430 hrs: CRNM Boardroom, 890 Pembina Hwy (in-person or via teleconference)
1130-1230 hrs: MBTelehealth Lunch N Learn

In an effort to make our very popular professional practice series accessible to more registered nurses, we have expanded the initiative to include a lunch and learn session available only via the MBTelehealth network. In order to participate via MBTelehealth you need to follow your own internal procedures to book your telehealth equipment so you can view and participate in the broadcast. In addition, you need to register with Melva Nordquist at the College so we know to look for you in the session and also so we can send out any printed materials in advance.

Space for these sessions will be limited initially as we undergo our own learning curve on delivering via MBTelehealth, but we will expand the number of participants as we become more familiar and adept at the technology. We are excited about the potential for this new delivery option and hope you consider participating in your facility. NB: Apparently the more lead time you book your participation in advance, the greater likelihood you will be able to access equipment and minimize the chances of being bumped (according to advice we received from MBTelehealth).
  • Wednesday, January 14th, 2009 - Improving Your Workplace
The climate of nurses’ work settings has become a popular topic of discussion and has resulted in a number of initiatives at the national and provincial levels across Canada to improve the environments in which nurses work and to lead to better quality in delivery of patient care. The intent of the presentation is to discuss the practical things that registered nurses can do to create and maintain quality workplaces that support professional nursing practice. Presented by Joanne Winsor RN BN MN, Consultant, Nursing Practice
  • Wednesday, February 11th, 2009 - The Scope of Practice of Registered Nurses
Frequently questions are posed to CRNM practice consultants relating to the scope of practice of registered nurses. The ability to work to one’s full scope of practice is one of the indicators of a quality professional practice environment. This session provides an opportunity to examine one’s own practice in relation to the legislated scope of practice. Participants will explore their assumptions about what is and what is not registered nursing scope of practice, nurse initiated interventions, and the principles of delegation. An overview of Graduate Nurse and Registered Nurse (EP) scope of practice will be provided. Presented by Peggy Martens RN BN MN, Consultant, Nursing Practice
  • Wednesday, March 4th, 2009 - Professional Boundaries
Registered nurses are responsible to maintain the boundaries of professional relationships, to act as client advocates and to intervene when appropriate in instances of boundary violations. Boundary violations occur, not because harm is intended, but often because the nurse has not reflected on the implications of an action from an ethical perspective. Participants will explore boundary issues from the perspective of the Code of Ethics for Registered Nurses and Professional Boundaries for Therapeutic Relationships. Presented by Suzanne Wowchuk RN BN MN, Consultant, Nursing Practice
There is no cost to register for these sessions. Registration is on a first come, first served basis as spaces are limited for in-person, teleconference and MBTeleHealth. Please register at least one week in advance by contacting Melva Nordquist, Administrative Coordinator for Nursing Practice by email at mnordquist@crnm.mb.ca or call toll free in Manitoba (800) 665-2027 ext 235 or in Winnipeg 774-3477 ext. 235. If you live outside of Winnipeg you can join us via teleconference during the 1300-1430 sessions. Materials will be emailed to you a few days prior to each session.

Our Nursing Practice Consultant team provides education and consultation services to members and employers in worksites across the province. Give us a call if you wish to book a session in your worksite or have a suggestion for future topics. We’re here to help!
