Continuing Competence Audits in ProgressThe Continuing Competence Program audits for RNs are now underway with audits for RN(EP)s expected to begin before spring. In total 5% of practicing RNs and 20% of RN(EP)s will be randomly selected to participate in this year's audit. Each will receive a letter in the mail detailing the items required for the audit. Most members included in the audit will be asked to submit a verification of practice hours form for the past five years and a completed audit form. Selected members will also be asked to submit their completed self-assessment and self-development plan for review by the auditors. This year, the audit will span a three year period from 2004 to 2006. The College appreciates the cooperation of all who are selected to participate in the audit. The College is required to perform annual audits under the RN Act. Surveys in the MailFrom time to time the College receives requests from researchers to survey specific groups of registered nurses. The College does not release mailing lists or email addresses to outside organizations. We do however help by facilitating these requests and mailing or emailing material on behalf of the researcher on a cost recovery basis. Prior to doing so, we review all materials to be sent and we receive a copy of the researcher's ethics approval for our file. The decision to participate in the research is totally up to each registered nurse. Such mailings typically have a note from the College indicating we are sending it on behalf of a third party. If you receive this type of mailing and have any questions, feel free to call us. Presently, studies are underway involving immunization, rural and remote nursing and maternity health. Nurses at the Forefront HIV/AIDSNancy DiPietro, an RN from Ontario, is challenging nurses across Canada to donate one hour of pay annually to the Stephen Lewis Foundation to combat HIV/AIDS in Africa. After hearing Stephen Lewis speak at the International Nurses' Forum, DiPietro was moved by the plight of nurses in Africa who in addition to their patients are often infected themselves. "One hour of pay could change another nurse's life for the better - perhaps provide more efficient care to more people or allow a nurse to spend another healthy day with her family," says DiPietro.
