Unauthorized Practice Story Receives Extensive Media Coverage

Recently, a case of unauthorized practice at Seven Oakes General Hospital in Winnipeg received local, provincial and national media coverage. In large part, the coverage focused on the time span in which this person was able to work as an RN prior to being discovered. The College tries to help make the validation process easier for employers and registered nurses by providing each practicing member with a laminated registration card that can be easily carried and shown on request. We also make a web-based online verification tool available to employers to easily and quickly check on the registration status of the RNs they employ.

As part of the coverage, the College took the opportunity to assure the public that this was a rare situation and that verification of registration status can be easily accomplished by asking an RN to show his or her registration card or calling the College to find out if someone is registered. As most of our members know, their name, registration number and any conditions on their practice are public information under the Act and Regulations. We also took the opportunity to advise the public that under the RN Act, employers are required to confirm the registration status of the RNs they employ at least annually.

Nursing Leadership Award – Call for Nominations

The Canadian College of Health Service Executives (CCHSE) invites you to nominate a deserving individual for the Nursing Leadership Award. Deadline to submit nominations is March 3, 2008.

For over a decade, the CCHSE Awards have been showcasing the success of exemplary individuals and teams, encouraging knowledge exchange and stimulating replication of best practices across the industry. Our award recipients will be acknowledged in June 2008, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, at our annual awards ceremony.

Sponsored by Baxter Canada Corporation, the Nursing Leadership Award builds on the themes of patient-centered care and leadership and honours those who demonstrate an ongoing commitment to excellence in these areas.

To be considered for this award, nominees must be nurses employed at the director or vice-president level who seek to advance nursing at every level, to remove barriers between providers and to build systems of quality care for patients. Nominees must have displayed their leadership qualities both within, and outside, their organization.

Upcoming Professional Practice Series Sessions

  • February 13, 2008 - Complaints & Investigation Process
The complaints investigation discipline process presentation will be of interest for any registered nurse but may be particularly helpful to individuals in leadership positions. The discussion will include how to lodge a complaint, what steps occur during the complaints process, monitoring of complaints and the responsibilities of registered nurses and employers. Participants will be provided with opportunity for questions. Presented by Deb Elias, Manager, Complaints Resolution
  • March 5, 2008 - Is my Practice Registered Nurse Practice?
Determining what work or practice constitutes registered nursing practice in Manitoba involves evaluating the specific practice in question in the context of the Registered Nurses Act and the Standards of Practice for Registered Nurses. This session will explore how CRNM determines whether a particular practice may be included as the practice of registered nursing, taking into account whether the particular practice is grounded in the competencies gained in basic nursing education programs and expanded through post-basic health-related education programs and whether the practice in question is currently considered to be best-practice and evidence-based. Presented by Suzanne Wowchuk, Consultant, Nursing Practice
All sessions take place from 1400 - 1530 hours in the CRNM boardroom, 890 Pembina Hwy. There is no cost to register. Please register at least one week in advance by contacting Melva Nordquist, Administrative Coordinator for Nursing Practice by email at mnordquist@crnm.mb.ca or call toll free in Manitoba (800) 665-2027 ext. 235 or in Winnipeg 774-3477 Ext. 235. If you live outside of Winnipeg you can register to join us via telephone. Education materials can be emailed to you ahead of time.
