4th Western Nurse Leaders Forum - Advance Program and Online Registration Now Available

The 4th Western Nurse Leaders Forum - "Leading the Way - the Challenge of Leadership" will be held at the Winnipeg Convention Centre, Winnipeg, MB, Oct. 15 - 17, 2007. Join us for an excellent program focusing on leadership strategies and challenges related to: Healthy Workplaces, Leadership Development and Internationally Educated Nurses. Don't miss this chance to hear some of Canada's thought leaders share their wisdom and experience on these topical issues.

Online registration is now available. You're invited to save on registration by taking advantage of early bird registration rates (Regular Registration $550 plus GST or Student Registration $275 plus GST) which are in effect until September 14th. (Students are defined as someone enrolled in a nursing education program leading to initial registration as an RN.) Click this link for online registration.

Hotel Info
A block of rooms have been reserved at the Radisson Winnipeg at a special conference rate of $119 per night for single or double occupancy. An additional charge of $15 per person per night will apply for more than 2 people sharing a room. Reservations can be made at the same time as registration via the online link.

Call for Abstracts
The Abstract submission deadline has been extended to June 30, 2007. Abstracts should focus on innovative practices and programs which will contribute to building nurse leadership capacity with all submissions addressing one of the following broad program sub-themes: Internationally Educated Nurses; Healthy Workplaces; or Leadership Development. 93rd Annual General Meeting

The College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba will hold its 93rd Annual General Meeting on Thursday June 14th at the new Parkland Recreation Complex at 200 - 1st Street Southeast in Dauphin, Manitoba. The festivities start the night before the AGM with a fabulous Banquet featuring local entertainment and a spectacular silent auction. Cocktail service begins at 1800 with the banquet served at 1830 and entertainment and the auction to follow at 1930.

The next morning features a half-day business meeting beginning at 1000, followed by a complementary lunch. Beginning at 1300 registered nurse lawyers from the Canadian Nurses Protective Society will hold a three-hour workshop on liability and other nursing legal issues.

The AGM which is free of charge begins at 0900 with registration followed by the Call to Order at 1000 hours. The morning business meeting will be video linked to the College's boardroom. Members attending from the College will be able to vote on any motions. Please note, space is limited at the College. Members are reminded that there will not be a vote of fees for 2008 as they were already approved at the 2006 AGM in Winnipeg. There will not be voting on bylaws required at the AGM as those bylaws requiring a vote have been deferred. Please note, the afternoon education session will not be available via video link in Winnipeg. Download the AGM agenda here.

Tickets for the pre-AGM banquet are $40.00 and may be obtained from CRNM in-person, by mail, telephone or fax. Download an order form here. Payment for tickets must be received before tickets will be mailed, reserved, or picked up. Deadline to purchase tickets is June 4, 2007.

Provincial Patient Safety Conference

Mark your calendar! The Manitoba Patient Safety Conference will take place Wednesday, November 21 from 7:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Winnipeg Convention Centre. Please check the Manitoba Institute for Patient Safety's website for registration details.

Leading Us to Excellence Award - Call for Submissions
Have you made a good catch that could have resulted in an incident or critical incident and in turn led to safer practice and shared learning? If so, the planning committee of the Provincial Patient Safety Conference wants to hear from you! All employees, physicians and students in Manitoba's health care system are invited to submit a description of a "good catch" that resulted in process improvements in patient safety and shared learning. The top three submissions, based on criteria outlined in the Call for Submissions, will be acknowledged at the Provincial Patient Safety Conference, November 21st, 2007 at the Winnipeg Convention Centre. Public Representatives Needed

The College is currently seeking individuals interested in serving as public representatives on our board and a variety of committees. Public representatives provide a non-nursing perspective and serve a variety of term lengths. Applicants should have an interest in health care and be well informed on health matters. Previous board or committee experience and/or volunteer experience would be helpful. All positions are voluntary but reasonable expenses are reimbursed as per CRNM policy.

In accordance with the RN Act, applicants from regulated health fields (current or retired) will not be considered. Successful candidates will be subject to a criminal records check. If you know someone who would be a good candidate for this position, please encourage them to apply by sending a resume to:

Professional Practice Series

  • September 5, 2007 - Continuing Competence Program
    The CRNM Continuing Competence Program is a requirement for all members. This session provides an overview of the program purpose, requirements, and processes. Participants will have lots of opportunity to ask questions.
  • October 3, 2007 - Best Practices in Documentation
    Documentation systems that support professional practice are one of the indicators of a quality professional practice environment. Characteristics of quality documentation systems will be reviewed. This session will also address the underlying principles of patient care documentation with a focus on legal issues and best practice guidelines.

All sessions take place from 1400 - 1530 hours in the CRNM boardroom, 890 Pembina Hwy. There is no cost to register for these sessions.
