CRNM Website Undergoes Major Redevelopment

eJournal Readers Invited to Participate in Needs Assessment Survey

The College’s website is about to undergo a major redevelopment over the coming months to better meet the needs of registered nurses, the public and other visitors to the site. As part of an extensive consultation process, readers of the eJournal are being invited to take part in a web-based survey.

“Data from this survey will help ensure the new site is responsive to our audience and matches their needs with the appropriate tools and content,” Glenn Hildebrand, Director of Communications, Member and Government Relations said. “We need to hear from our stakeholders and customers to be sure we are delivering a useful and helpful product that meets all of our needs.”

The web survey will be open until noon on March 12th. Use this link to participate in the survey.

“Your opinions and views are important to us,” Hildebrand added. “The survey will only take about 5 minutes or so but the information it will provide will prove invaluable to the development of the new site.”

The new site is expected to be launched this summer.

National Nursing Week

Nursing week (May 12 – 18, 2008) takes on a special significance this year as the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) celebrates its centennial. The theme for this year is the same as last year: Think you know nursing, take a closer look. As in past years, the College will participate by hosting a kick-off event at the Manitoba Legislature featuring the Minister of Health proclaiming Nursing Week in Manitoba followed by a reception. Plans are still being finalized for a second event expected to take place mid-week. Details will be available on the College’s website as they are finalized.

As part of nursing week CNA has made posters available through the College. Supply of these posters is limited and their availability is on a first-come, first-served basis. Contact the College at info@crnm.mb.ca to obtain your poster or stop by the office during weekday office hours (0830 – 1630) to pick one up.

Upcoming Professional Practice Series Sessions

New Time: 1300 – 1500 hours
  • Wednesday, April 2, 2008 – Quality Practice Environments
The climate of nurses’ work settings has become a popular topic of discussion. Furthermore, the connection has been clearly identified between the climate and the impact on patient outcomes such as pressure ulcers, urinary tract infections, pneumonia and postoperative wound infections (McGillis Hall et al., 2003). This has resulted in several initiatives at the national and provincial levels to improve the environments in which nurses work to lead to better quality in delivery of patient care. Come and learn about an initiative to assist Manitoba registered nurses and their employers in identifying and addressing issues related to the quality of current practice environments. The intent of the initiative, based on the RNAO best practice guideline, is to help provide registered nurses and their employers with a self-directed plan designed to create and maintain quality workplaces that support professional nursing practice. Presented by Joanne Winsor RN BN MN, Consultant, Nursing Practice
  • Wednesday, May 7, 2008 – Professional Self Concept
Nursing has been at the centre of change over the past several decades. How has this affected nurse’s attitudes and self concept on their profession? This presentation will explore the characteristics or dimensions of the successful professional nurse from the perspective of the Standards of Practice for Registered Nurses. Presented by Peggy Martens RN BN MN, Consultant, Nursing Practice
  • Wednesday, June 11, 2008 – Best Practices in Documentation (for Nurse Educators)
Documentation systems that support professional practice are only one of the indicators of a quality professional practice environment. Characteristics of quality documentation systems will be reviewed. This session will also address the underlying principles of patient care documentation with a focus on legal issues and best practice guidelines. This session is reserved for nurse educators/staff development nurses as a Train-the-Trainer model to be brought to the workplace. Presented by Peggy Martens RN BN MN, Consultant, Nursing Practice
All sessions take place from 1300 – 1500 hours in the CRNM boardroom, 890 Pembina Hwy. There is no cost to register. Please register at least one week in advance by contacting Melva Nordquist, Administrative Coordinator for Nursing Practice by email at mnordquist@crnm.mb.ca or call toll free in Manitoba (800) 665-2027 ext. 235 or in Winnipeg 774-3477 Ext. 235.
