Cough and Sneeze Etiquette Web Resources

The popular public awareness hand washing campaign has expanded to include cough and sneeze etiquette. The new public service announcements have been airing province wide since September. You can view the new spots and download several other resources about covering your cough and sneeze to reduce the spread of disease and germs on the College website at www.crnm.mb.ca/cough.php

Avoid the Late Fee

If you haven’t already submitted your registration renewal application to the College don’t forget that a late fee applies to any application received after November 30, 2007. The $50.00 late penalty ($53.00 including GST) is in addition to the registration renewal fee payable by the member. A certificate of practice will not be issued until all fees are paid.

Online renewal is still available via the College website: www.crnm.mb.ca This year, the online renewal process has been streamlined. You will be asked for your registration number, year of birth and postal code to access your registration renewal application for 2008. Your current information will appear on screen. You simply have to update any changed information and answer the remaining questions. You will receive an email confirmation once you have successfully completed the application online. It’s that simple.

Get Involved!

Voice Your Interest
The College maintains a database of registered nurses and members of the public interested in taking an active role in the College. We collect this data through our Voice Your Interest form available via our website to match volunteers with appropriate volunteer opportunities. Experience, area of practice and the types of activities you’ve indicated you are prepared to serve in are all considered when appointments are made to CRNM committees, or when outside agencies seek input and representation from the College and registered nurses.

Here is how the process works. Once a request for a committee member or other volunteer is received, we search our database for individuals whose experience and education most closely fit the request. We then contact the individuals to ascertain their interest in serving on a particular committee. At that time, the term of office and level of commitment required is discussed. Once we have confirmed interest, the individuals’ names are forwarded to the Appointments Committee for consideration.

Your ideas are vital in developing policy and supports that are relevant to registered nurses and the health of Manitobans. Please contribute to the vitality of the College and the betterment of health and nursing by voicing your interest: www.crnm.mb.ca/voice.php

PLA Reviewers
In addition to the committee and general volunteer opportunities on the Voice Your Interest form, we are currently looking for practicing members who are interested in becoming PLA (Prior Learning Assessment) Reviewers.

A prior learning assessment involves active reflection and analysis of past educational experiences in order to demonstrate the achieved learning in a designated framework. The framework for the Education Assessment Questionnaire is based on the Entry Level Competencies or the Competencies for the Registered Nurse (Extended Practice), RN(EP). Registration on the register is based on the demonstration of competence at the appropriate level in each of the competency areas.

A candidate’s objective in a PLA is to reflect on prior educational experiences in a systematic way to construct a valid argument to demonstrate how the candidate has achieved each competency; to describe how the knowledge, skill and judgment to perform the competencies was acquired through education and experience. Read more about the Prior Learning Assessment process in the Fact Sheets Acquired Learning Assessment for the Purpose of Registration on the Register of Registered Nurses and Acquired Learning Assessment for the Purpose of Registration on the Extended Practice Register

PLA reviewers are responsible for reviewing submitted documentation from candidates to determine how much of each competence the candidate demonstrated in their submission.

We are looking for RNs with knowledge of curriculum, knowledge of RN(EP) practice and competencies, that have experience in direct care and as an educator, that have an ability to meet timelines and have excellent verbal and written skills to become PLA Reviewers. Training will be provided.

If you are interested in becoming a PLA Reviewer please contact Deb Elias RN, Manager Complaints Resolution for more information at delias@crnm.mb.ca or 784-5184.

Continuing Competence Correction

The Report on the 2006 Continuing Competence Program Audit published on pages 17 & 18 of the October 2007 issue of the Manitoba RN Journal contained a minor error. Table 1 on page 18 makes two references to identifying a goal or goals within the section “Compliance Detailed Breakdown.” In both of these cases, the reference should have been about identifying a strength or strengths and not a goal, as in, “Met the requirements but were reminded to identify at least one strength and one area of self-development for each standard.” We apologize for any confusion that may have resulted from this oversight and thank the members who called the College seeking clarification. Please do not hesitate to contact Suzanne Wowchuk RN swowchuk@crnm.mb.ca Nursing Practice Consultant if you require more information.

Calling All Retired RNs

Retired nurses have been getting together at CRNM to keep in touch. There are no committees, just good times with fellow colleagues. The next get together is Friday, January 18, 2008, 1 - 3:00 pm. at CRNM. Please contact Marilyn Robinson at 889-2318 or merobins@mts.net to confirm your attendance so we can ensure sufficient snacks for the meeting. We look forward to seeing you - oh, yes, and bring your retired nursing friends who may no longer have a membership with CRNM but are still welcome to join us and share ideas and memories.
