College Accepts Ad Hoc CNPI Report Review Committee RecommendationsThis committee was appointed in 2006 with a mandate to review the final report of the Canadian Nurse Practitioner Initiative (CNPI), a pan-Canadian framework to promote the sustained integration of the role of nurse practitioners in primary health care across Canada.The committee completed its deliberations and provided recommendations to the College’s board of directors at its April meeting. Following a rich discussion of several of the committee’s recommendations, the board accepted all of the committee’s recommendations and thanked them for their diligent efforts. Nominate a Colleague for the CNA Centennial AwardsThe Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) will mark its 100th anniversary in 2008. As part of the celebrations, 100 Centennial Awards will be presented on a one-time basis to 100 Canadian registered nurses in recognition of their contribution to nursing in Canada. The College will nominate four individuals who will receive the award.The CNA Centennial Awards will recognize registered nurses whose demonstrated personal contribution has had a positive impact on the nursing profession and/or the practice of nursing in Canada and/or abroad that brings credit to nursing in Canada; who have contributed in one or more of the areas of nursing - clinical nursing practice; education and research; and administration; and who have made consistent contributions over time. To be eligible, the nominee must be a Canadian citizen and a registered nurse who is a member in good standing of the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba or who was a registered nurse and a member in good standing of a provincial/territorial nursing regulatory body/association that was a member of CNA at the time of her or his contribution to nursing in Canada. New CRNM Board Members Begin TermA total of six new members began their 2007-2010 term on the Board of Directors recently. We are pleased to welcome Eileen Vodden RN from Central District, Darren Luellman RN from Eastman District, Elsie Duff RN(EP) from Interlake District, Rita Valcourt RN from Parkland District, Brenda Dawyduk RN(EP) from Thompson District and new public representative Gary McPherson from Winnipeg. The next CRNM Board Meeting is Sept 20-21. The College publishes the agenda and highlights of past board meetings on the website.CRNM Registration Renewal Underway for 2008Watch your mailbox or your email inbox for registration renewal information for 2008. Material will be mailed in early September. If you have not received your renewal information by the end of September, please contact the College. Remember, we send the information to the last address we have on record. If you have changed your address and not reported it to the College please contact the College and report the change right away.Continuing Competence Audits Getting Underway. Watch your mailbox!The 2007 Continuing Competence Program Annual Audit will be conducted in conjunction with the College’s 2008 Registration Renewal process. For those members randomly selected for participation in the 2007 audit, written notification will accompany 2008 Registration Renewal documents. Please note that members participating in the audit must submit a completed paper copy of the registration renewal form along with the required audit materials and pay the 2008 registration fee in order to fulfill 2008 registration renewal requirements. Plans are already underway to make the entire process available online for 2009. Unfortunately, due to a variety of factors, including implementation of a new member database next year the online access could not be facilitated at this time.Professional Practice Series

The 2007 theme is: Patient Safety: Be Involved. Ask. Talk. Listen.Go to www.patientsafetyweek.ca for resources, ideas for local events, and information on becoming a Canadian Patient Safety Week Leader. In Manitoba, the It’s Safe to Ask initiative is an excellent example of involvement and communication. It’s Safe to Ask is based on the belief that patients and families can play an important role in enhancing the safety and quality of their health care by becoming active, informed members of their care team. Significant improvements can be made in the quality of health care and patient safety by doing something as simple as talking about three questions that often go unasked by patients, particularly those with low health literacy:
Provincial Patient Safety Conference to Include Public ForumFor the first time a Public Forum will be held as part of the annual Provincial Patient Safety Conference in November in Winnipeg. This forum is free to all who wish to attend. No registration is required.We Grieve, We Listen, We Learn is a Public Forum on Patient Safety being held on Wednesday, November 21 1830 hrs - 2000 hrs at the Winnipeg Convention Centre. It will feature Mr. John Lewis, RN, BScN, Hamilton, Ontario; Dr. Stavros Prineas, Bathurst, Australia; and Dr. Rob Robson, Winnipeg, Manitoba. We Grieve, We Listen, We Learn will be a powerful, emotional and thought-provoking journey of communication, compassion and openness as health care providers and members of the public hear and discuss the thoughts, views and experiences of families using our health care system. After a presentation by the featured presenters, the floor will be opened to questions. People are welcome to come to a microphone to ask their questions with the presenters or they can have their questions read out anonymously. This event is being organized by the Provincial Patient Safety Conference Committee and is being sponsored in part by the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba.
