NP Title Protection Approved

The provincial government recently passed changes to the Extended Practice Regulation of the Registered Nurses Act which adds title protection to the term Nurse Practitioner. As a result, those registered on the Registered Nurse Extended Practice RN(EP) Register now have a choice of how they are referred to. They may call themselves either a Nurse Practitioner - or use the abbreviation NP or any variation; or they may call themselves an Extended Practice Registered Nurse, Registered Nurse Extended Practice - or use the abbreviation RN(EP) or any variation.

In addition, two changes were made to Schedule A of the regulation regarding diagnostic tests. A copy of the revised regulation is available on the Government of Manitoba’s Statutory Publications website http://web2.gov.mb.ca/laws/regs/2008/146.pdf The regulation change was registered September 8, 2008. Manitoba Health is partnering with the College, along with the Manitoba Pharmaceutical Association and the College of Physicians and Surgeons in the development and distribution of an information poster informing Manitobans about Nurse Practitioners.

Partners in Patient Safety - A Lunch and Learn Session

The College is partnering with Health Canada and the Manitoba Institute for Patient Safety to kick off Patient Safety Week with a special Lunch and Learn session for all registered nurses. Join us on Monday, September 29 between 1130 and 1300 hours at the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba, 890 Pembina Highway in Winnipeg as we share ways you can improve patient safety in your practice setting. The session will feature presentations by the Canada Vigilance Program - Health Canada's post-market surveillance program that collects and assesses reports of suspected adverse reactions to health products marketed in Canada. Registered nurses occupy a pivotal position in adverse reaction reporting. You'll learn how the Vigilance Program provides a variety of tools for health professionals to report suspected adverse reactions simply and easily.

The Manitoba Institute for Patient Safety (MIPS) is an invaluable resource for health professionals and the public. You'll get an overview of MIPS and hear about a number of important initiatives you can take part in to enhance patient safety in your practice setting. The College is proud to be a premier member of MIPS and encourages all registered nurses to inform themselves about the resources MIPS makes available to RNs and other health professionals.

Space is limited for this Lunch & Learn session and lunch will be provided. Please register by contacting Melva Nordquist, Administrative Coordinator for Nursing Practice by email at mnordquist@crnm.mb.ca or call toll free in Manitoba (800) 665-2027 ext. 235 or in Winnipeg 774-3477 ext. 235.
