H1N1 Information Available on College’s Website

Visit the College’s website at www.crnm.mb.ca for a number of H1N1 Influenza resources including links to the Public Health Agency of Canada, Manitoba Health and FightFlu.ca websites. In addition, the College has developed the Duty to Provide Care in a Disease Outbreak fact sheet which provides information on registered nurse responsibilities during a disease outbreak.

Watch for Registration Renewal Materials in September

Watch your mailbox or your email inbox for registration renewal information this month. If you are a new registrant or renewed online last year, you’ll receive a postcard from the College with information about the 2010 renewal and an email with a link to the online renewal form by mid-September. Others will receive a paper package through the mail about the same time. If you have not received yours by end of September, contact the College.

To allow sufficient time for data entry and the processing of more than 12,000 registration applications before the end of the year, an administrative deadline of November 15, 2009 has been set for the return of your renewal form and payment of fees. A late fee will apply to any renewal received after the November 15, 2009 administrative deadline. The $50 late penalty ($52.50 including GST) is in addition to the registration renewal fee payable by the member. A certificate of practice will not be issued until all fees and penalties are paid.

If your email address or postal address have changed within the past 12 months please ensure you have reported it to the College so we are sending the information to the correct address. Outdated addresses cost both time and money and result in delays in you receiving your renewal information. Report address changes via email to registration@crnm.mb.ca. Simply tell us your name, registration number and your old and new address information.

Mental Health Services and Technology Survey

The National Research Council is inviting all mental health workers in Canada to share their thoughts about using technologies to deliver mental health services. Mental health workers are increasingly using technologies in their work with clients, but very little is known about how mental health workers feel about this and their experiences with various technologies. An online survey has been developed to gather this information. The online survey - open to anyone in Canada working in the field of mental health - is completely anonymous. The National Research Council Institute for Information Technology (NRC-IIT) in Fredericton is conducting this study. All the resulting publications will be available free of charge to the public, via NRC’s online publications website. We hope the outcomes will be useful to everyone working to improve the delivery of mental health services in Canada.

Please visit http://tiny.cc/BlW4Z for more information and to start the survey.

  • Wednesday, October 14, 2009 - Is My Practice Registered Nurse Practice?
In a repeat of the presentation given in March 2008, we will discuss how determining what work or practice constitutes registered nursing practice in Manitoba involves evaluating the specific practice in question in the context of the Registered Nurses Act and the Standards of Practice for Registered Nurses. This session will explore how CRNM determines whether a particular practice may be included as the practice of registered nursing, taking into account whether the particular practice is grounded in the competencies gained in basic nursing education programs and expanded through post-basic health-related education programs and whether the practice in question is currently considered to be best-practice and evidence-based. Presented by Suzanne Wowchuk RN BN MN CHPCN(C), Consultant, Nursing Practice
  • Wednesday, November 4, 2009 - The Straw that Broke the Nurse’s Back: How Conflict Can Contribute to a Complaint
Nurses experience conflict and stress in the workplace. Conflicts arise from factors such as communication style, time and resource constraints, patient care and safety concerns. Conflict can be stressful or have positive outcomes. The cumulative effects of unhealthy conflict, associated stress and lack of self care may lead to complaints. Participants will review the importance of managing every day stress and conflict. Presented by Deb Elias RN BN MN, Manager, Complaints Resolution and Tracey Legary RN CHPCN(C), Coordinator, Complaints Resolution
  • Wednesday, December 2, 2009 - Extreme Makeover Workplace Edition: Creating a Quality Practice Environment
CRNM recognizes the importance of quality practice environments in which registered nurses work to deliver expert health care services to Manitobans. In order to assist registered nurses in working together with stakeholders to advocate for and achieve quality practice environments, CRNM is implementing the Quality Practice Environment Initiative (QPEI). We will discuss the six guidelines of the initiative that will establish benchmarks for registered nurses and their employers to use in both assessing the quality of their current workplace and in working toward creating a high quality practice environment. Presented by Tammy Murdoch RN BN MN, Consultant, Nursing Practice
There is no cost to register for these sessions. Registration is on a first come, first served basis as spaces are limited for in-person, teleconference and MBTeleHealth.
