Factors Associated with Inadequate Prenatal Care Among Inner-City Women in Winnipeg

370 Helen Glass Centre, University of Manitoba , 1200 - 1300 - The reasons for not obtaining prenatal care (PNC) even when it is available and accessible are complex. The purpose of this study was to examine factors associated with use of PNC among women living in 8 inner-city Winnipeg neighborhoods with the highest rates of inadequate PNC. We conducted a case-control study with 402 controls (women with adequate PNC) and 201 cases (women with inadequate PNC), matched 2:1 by neighborhood. Postpartum women completed a questionnaire while in hospital. Bivariate analyses were conducted to estimate the association of a variety of independent variables with inadequate PNC, stratifying by neighborhood, and a backward stepwise multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed. Results showed that a variety of socio-demographic factors, psychosocial characteristics, health behaviors and barriers are associated with inadequate PNC among inner-city women. Knowledge of these factors will assist service providers and policy makers to implement strategies to improve use of PNC by inner-city women. Presented by Dr. Maureen Heaman. You can participate in this session via Telehealth. Professional Practice Education Series: Preceptoring and Mentoring

1130-1230 hrs: Lunch N Learn (MBTelehealth, in-person in the CRNM Board room 890 Pembina Hwy, and via teleconference) - Preceptoring and mentoring are powerful mechanisms for students, recent graduate nurses or nurses new to a particular area of nursing to gain clinical knowledge and benefit from the experiences of more senior nurses. Having a positive preceptoring or mentoring experience has been shown to impact workplace satisfaction and retention of new nurses and has significant benefits for the senior nurse as well. The reality of today’s workplace with staffing levels and increased patient acuity leaves nurses little time to take on preceptoring or mentoring new nurses. This presentation will address the issues of mentorship and preceptorship in nursing, the benefits and the costs, and begin a discussion of creating a workplace culture that supports and nurtures preceptorship and mentorship in nursing. Presented by Peggy Martens, RN BN MN, Consultant, Nursing Practice and Geraldine Selkirk, RN BN MHS Consultant, Nursing Practice. There is no cost to register for these sessions. Registration is on a first come, first served basis as spaces are limited for in-person, teleconference and MBTeleHealth. Please register at least one week in advance by contacting Erin Dietrich, Administrative Assistant for Nursing Practice by email at edietrich@crnm.mb.ca  or call toll free in Manitoba (800) 665-2027 ext 668 or in Winnipeg 789-0668. If you live outside of Winnipeg and do not have access to TeleHealth, you can join us via teleconference. Materials will be emailed to you a few days prior to each session.

Embodying Spirit, Fostering Connections: The Design of an Integrated Cancer Treatment Centre

370 Helen Glass Centre, University of Manitoba, 1200 - 1300 - For most people in North America, being diagnosed with and undergoing treatments for cancer occurs exclusively in a healthcare setting. All too often, this healthcare setting provides a backdrop privileging the technological requirements of conventional medicine over the well-being of the people who inhabit it. Conversely, this project is founded on a different, more holistic approach to cancer care called integrative oncology. The project investigates how an integrative cancer treatment centre can be designed to be more than a technological backdrop, endeavoring to become an active entity that truly supports those dealing with cancer. This investigation includes an extensive literature review of theoretical and evidence-based sources, a review of relevant design precedents and a survey of existing integrative cancer treatment centres. The investigation concludes with a design solution for an integrated cancer treatment centre and related findings. Presented by Anna Westlund. You can participate in this session via Telehealth. If you would like to register your site, please contact the Manitoba Centre for Nursing and Health Research at 474-9080 or nursing_research@umanitoba.ca
