RN(EP)/NP Continuing Competence Requirements
The annual requirements of the Continuing Competence Program for Registered Nurses (Extended Practice)/Nurse Practitioners include:
- A completed self-assessment, identifying one strength and one area for self development for each standard & competency and link the identified area(s) for self-development with your self-development plan.
- A completed self-development plan, which includes the following 3 components:
- identification of at least one goal for self-development based on the areas for self-development identified in your self-assessment,
- documentation of your participation in learning activities and
- evaluation of the impact of your learning on your nursing practice.
- Completed Peer Case Reviews. Identify and discuss three cases managed by you.
- Discussion includes case histories, case management, best practices and participants' feedback and Standards of Practice for RNs on the EP register and Competencies for the RN(EP) Register
- Focus is educational
- Completed Quality of Care Evaluations which can be accomplished through either:
- Client Quality of Care Evaluations
- Request client feedback
- Take action in response to feedback
- Report actions taken
OR
- Reflection on Quality of Care Evaluations
- Reflect on your practice
- Document examples of client interactions
- Attaining the minimum of 1800 total registered nurse (extended practice)/nurse practitioner practice hours over the previous 3 years or 600 hours in the previous year.

RN(EP)/NP Continuing Competence Program Documents
The Forms Package contains the self-assessment form which is based on the
Standards of Practice for Registered Nurses on the Extended Practice Register and the
Competencies for the Registered Nurse Extended Practice, RN(EP) Register, self development plan, peer case review tools, quality of care evaluations and two optional tools: peer/colleague feedback, and reflective practice notes. You are required to complete the self-assessment & self development plan, participate in three (3) peer case reviews and participate in quality of care evaluations on an annual basis. Peer/colleague feedback and reflective practice notes are designed as optional tools to complete the required components of the program.
Remember to keep your documentation for the Continuing Competence Program for FIVE years for auditing purposes.
