RN Requirements and Documents

The annual requirements of the Continuing Competence Program for Registered Nurses include:

1. A completed self-assessment, identifying at least one indicator as a strength and one indicator as an area for self-development for each of the 5 Standards of Practice for Registered Nurses.
2. A completed self-development plan, which includes the following 3 components:
   1. identification of a learning goal,
   2. documentation of learning/professional development activities towards your learning goal,
   3. evaluation of the impact of learning/professional development activities on nursing practice.
3. Attaining the minimum of 1125 total nursing practice hours over the previous 5 years or 450 hours in the previous 2 years.

Handbook
The Handbook provides registered nurses with the information that they need to implement the continuing competence program. Read through the Handbook first to familiarize yourself with the requirements of the program before beginning.

Forms Package
The Forms Package contains the self-assessment form, peer/colleague feedback form, self-development plan and reflective practice notes. Registered nurses are required to complete the self-assessment and the self-development plan on an annual basis. Peer/colleague feedback and reflective practice notes are designed as supplemental tools. They are not required components of the program. Photocopy the Forms Package prior to completing them so that you will have forms to begin the process next year.

Pocket Journal
The Pocket Journal is a supplemental tool that contains your self-development plan. It is a place to document learning activities, reflect on the impact of learning on your practice, and record peer/colleague feedback. You may use any combination of tools that you wish providing you complete the required components of the annual self-assessment and self-development plan.

Remember to keep your continuing competence documentation for FIVE years for auditing purposes.
