What is an extended practice registered nurse or RN(EP)?
The designation RN(EP) refers to a registered nurse who is on the extended practice register of the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba. RN(EP) may also be referred to as an extended practice registered nurse, a registered nurse(extended practice) or a registered nurse, nurse practitioner. This designation signifies that the RN has completed advanced education (or has substantially equivalent education and experience), and has passed an approved examination demonstrating extended practice competencies. Only an RN registered on the extended practice register can use the title Registered Nurse (Extended Practice), Registered Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, or the abbreviations RN(EP), RN,NP, or any derivative.
What can an RN(EP) do that an RN can’t do?
In addition to the services (scope of practice) a Registered Nurse can already provide, an RN(EP) or RN,NP can independently prescribe medications, order and manage the results of screening and diagnostic tests, and perform minor surgical and invasive procedures. The Extended Practice Regulation outlines the specific services in greater detail. The RN(EP) or RN,NP consults and collaborates with other health care professionals as appropriate to ensure that the overall health care needs of clients are met.
Are these extended practice registered nurses or RN(EP)s the same as nurse practitioners?
Yes. In 2008, the provincial government enacted changes to the Extended Practice Regulation of the Registered Nurses Act which adds title protection to the term Nurse Practitioner. As a result, those registered on the Registered Nurse Extended Practice or RN(EP) Register now have a choice of how they are referred to. They may call themselves either a Nurse Practitioner - or use the abbreviation NP or any variation; or they may call themselves a Registered Nurse (Extended Practice) - or use the abbreviation RN(EP) or any variation. For the purposes of clarity, all references to RN(EP) in this document will also apply to NPs.
Does a physician need to co-sign a prescription or orders written by an RN(EP)/RN,NP?
No. While an RN(EP)/RN,NP often works in collaboration with doctors, pharmacists, RNs and other health care professionals they are responsible and accountable for their own practice. In other words, they work independently and have the legal authority to write prescriptions, order diagnostic and screening tests and manage the results, and perform minor surgical and invasive procedures as outlined in the Extended Practice Regulation.
What is the legal authority for registered nurses on this register to perform these additional services?
The College is charged with the administration of the Registered Nurses Act and Regulations, including the Extended Practice Regulation.
How can I tell whether someone is on the Extended Practice Register?
To verify registration status, a member of the public, employer or other health care provider can check
CRNM Nurse Check. Employers may use the College’s online employer verification service to obtain this information year round on a 24/7 basis.
