  1. Can anyone use the online renewal?
    Everyone is encouraged to use online renewal. No one has been excluded from being able to apply for renewal online. There are some circumstances where we may require additional information from you. If that is the case, your application will be held as pending until all of the requirements have been satisfied.
  2. How will I know if I have been selected for the Continuing Competence Audit?
    The Continuing Competence Audit now takes place as part of the registration renewal cycle. Members who have been selected to participate in the audit will be notified by mail and receive details and instructions as part of their registration renewal package. Members must provide the requested audit materials as part of their renewal.
  3. I recently moved and my postal code has changed. Will that cause a problem?
    If you’ve moved and not told us yet, you may need to use your old postal code to sign in to the online renewal system if you are renewing online for the first time. Once you have signed in, you can update your address information online. This will update our records and ensure you receive the RN Journal and other College mailings at your new address. Remember, we send your Certificate of Practice to the address we have on file so it is important we have your current address.
  4. When logging in I enter the information requested and it tells me my birth year is wrong. I know when I was born so what do I do now?
    We have only been collecting date of birth information for the past couple of years. It is possible we have an incorrect year in our records. Call the College or activate the online support and ask what year we have listed. Enter the birth year we give you and correct your date of birth on the renewal application. That will allow us to update our records and this situation should not repeat itself.
  5. I renewed online last year but have misplaced/forgotten my password. What do I do now?
    Click the “forgot password” link on the registration renewal page. The College will send your password to the email address we have on file.

    If you have changed your email address, contact the College and update this information. You can then have the College send your existing password to your updated email address, or provide you with a default password. If you choose to be given a default password, you will need to change the password once you log in to the online registration renewal page.
  6. I started to fill out my renewal at work and then got called away. What do I do now?
    Log back in as you did the first time. The information you entered to that point will have been saved and you will be able to continue from that point. Your information is retained this way until you push the final submit button after your payment information has been confirmed.
  7. Once I complete the online renewal am I registered for 2010?
    Not quite. You will receive a conformation email indicating we have received your renewal application. Your application is then reviewed to ensure it meets all of the requirements for renewal. Once this has occurred, we will mail practicing members their Certificate of Practice for 2010. If you renew prior to the administrative deadline of November 15th you should receive your Certificate before the end of December. Employers will be able to verify your registration status online within a day or two of your application being received. Non-practicing members receive a letter early in the New Year.
  8. I completed my registration renewal application online but did not receive an email confirmation. What should I do?
    The confirmation email is automatically sent to the email address you indicated on your registration renewal form. Typically reasons for not receiving the confirmation include: an error typing the email address you gave us or the confirmation email may be in your "junk email" folder. Please contact Registration Services at or (204) 784-5181 or (800) 665-2027 ext. 181 (Toll free in Manitoba only) to confirm we have received your registration renewal application.
  9. How do I come up with my practice hours?
    Practicing members need to tell us how many hours they will work up to the end of 2009. This projection may require some calculation by the member. Members may claim actual hours worked as an RN, including overtime. Please note that sick time, vacation time or other time-off should not be included in the calculation. Self-reported practice hours are subject to audit by the College. Estimated practice hours for 2009 can be updated at renewal next year. Do your best to provide an accurate estimate.
  10. What are full time hours?
    The number of full time hours worked can vary for each member depending on length of shifts, vacation taken, overtime worked and their collective agreement. Here is an example of a typical calculation: An RN working full time normally works 7.75 hours per day or 77.5 per pay period (10 days X 7.75 hours). If the RN has 4 weeks vacation and did not work any overtime, the calculation would look like this: 77.5 hours X 26 pay periods = 2,015 hours less vacation of 4 weeks (20 days X 7.75 hours=155 hours) gives a total of (2015-155) 1,860 hours for the year. Members are encouraged to estimate and calculate their own hours rather than rely on someone else’s hours. Often, a member can refer to their pay stubs or can contact human resources for verification of their practice hours.
  11. How many hours must I have worked to be eligible for registration renewal?
    In order to be eligible for registration renewal in Manitoba, nurses must have practiced a minimum of 1125 hours in the previous five years or 450 hours in the previous 2 years in a recognized field of nursing while registered as an RN.

  12. Can on-call hours be considered practice hours?
    No, unless you are actually called in to provide nursing care.
  13. When reporting practice hours, can I include the hours I worked on the graduate register?
    No. These are not calculated for the purpose of renewal.
  14. I am off work due to a long-term disability or Workers Compensation claim. Should I indicate I have a physical ailment on the Disclosure portion of the application for renewal?
    Not necessarily. This question is meant to identify if you have a physical ailment which prevents you from practicing nursing in a safe and competent manner. An illness, injury or disability does not necessarily prevent you from practicing safely or competently. If you are unsure about your specific situation, contact the College and ask to speak with a nursing practice consultant.
  15. I am on a back-to-work program because of a long term disability. Can I claim these hours as practice hours?
    Yes, you can claim these hours as the work is considered to be nursing practice.
  16. What if my hours from a previous year(s) is/are incorrect on the online form?
    You are encouraged to make corrections on the renewal form, if they are needed. It is not unusual for the previous year’s estimate to require adjusting once you know what you actually worked.
  17. What are the registration fees for 2010 and how do they compare with last year?
    They are exactly the same. There was no fee increase from 2009 to 2010.

    The fees for 2010 (including GST) are as follows:

    Register of Registered Nurses Extended Practice
    $389.99
    Register of Practicing Registered Nurses
    $337.49
    Register of Non-Practicing Members
    $100.02
    Register of Graduate Nurses - for each four month period
    $112.50
  18. Why is there a late penalty fee when my registration is good until the end of December?
    The late fee is automatically assessed on all applications for renewal received after the administrative deadline of November 15. It has nothing to do with your 2009 registration. That remains in effect until the end of the year.
  19. Why are you imposing this penalty?
    The vast majority of registered nurses comply with the administrative deadline and complete their registration renewal prior to that deadline. A small number of RNs (less than 5%) consistently fail to meet the deadline. A couple of years ago the penalty came into effect to encourage greater compliance. It appears to be working. The $50 late penalty (plus GST) automatically takes effect after November 15th. We hope we do not have to impose the penalty on anyone. That choice lies with members.
  20. What happens if I wait until my registration expires and then register in 2010?
    If you wait until after December 31st – you will be required to reinstate your registration. You will also be required to submit a verification of practice hours and sign a declaration that you have not practiced nursing during that time. If you have been registered in another province or country you may have to provide a verification of registration from the regulatory body for that jurisdiction. There is a $50.00 (plus GST) reinstatement fee which is payable in addition to the cost of registration for 2010.
  21. What is this unauthorized practice penalty and who does it apply to?
    This penalty is only imposed on registration applications where a member has failed to renew by December 31 and practiced after that date. The penalty is $500 ($525 including GST) over and above the practicing registration fee for any calendar year, or part year, when a person practiced while not registered to practice. This penalty is in addition to sanctions provided under the Registered Nurses Act, Regulations and CRNM policies.

    Any member wishing to renew after December 31 will be required to reinstate their registration with the College. This may include signing a declaration indicating he or she has not practiced since December 31. Anyone who has practiced after December 31, without being registered, will be subject to the penalty.
  22. I can prove I renewed on the Internet but I did not get my certificate yet.
    Submitting an application for renewal does not mean a person is registered. All applications for renewal are assessed to ensure they meet eligibility prior to receiving approval. If a person submits an application for renewal prior to the administrative deadline, there should be no problem getting a certificate of practice prior to the end of the year. In addition, employers can verify your registration status online.
  23. What Does My Registration Fee Entitle Me To?
    Most registered nurses recognize the importance of registration as a regulated health professional. The annual registration fees for registered nurses also provide a number of other advantages. These include:
    • Professional liability protection through the Canadian Nurses Protective Society (CNPS);
    • Membership in the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) and the International Council of Nurses (ICN);
    • Four issues of the Manitoba RN Journal;
    • Nine issues of the Canadian Nurse journal from CNA;
    • Access to the College’s publications, website and other resources;
    • Professional practice support services at the College (by phone, email or in person);
    • The ability to attend and participate in the College’s Professional Practice Series of education sessions (either in-person or via MBTelehealth);
    • The ability to attend, participate in and vote at meetings of the College as per the bylaws; and
    • The ability to serve as an appointed member of a College committee or to hold office on the Board of Directors.

    We have found there are a number of services members are less familiar with. These include:
    • A sustainable organization to ensure continuity of our ability to self regulate;
    • Standards of Practice and a Code of Ethics continually monitored and revised to remain relevant and viable;
    • Complaints, Investigation and Discipline processes;
    • A transparent registration process available worldwide via the Internet;
    • Eight issues of the Manitoba RN eJournal (if an email address is provided);
    • An effective role in national and international nursing policy development;
    • A robust nursing education approval process;
    • Strong, productive working relationships with Canadian nursing organizations, Manitoba regulated health professional bodies, government, employers and Manitoba nursing schools;
    • Strong participation and representation of the public through public reps on our Board of Directors; and
    • Access to CNA programming including National Nursing Week, CNA certifications, and a vibrant federal government relations and lobbying process.

    In addition, the College offers resources and other forms of support to assist registered nurses in their practice. These include:
    • Nursing Leadership support;
    • Continuing Competence support;
    • A Voice your Interest database that matches member interest and expertise to needs identified by the College and its partners; and
    • The Professional Practice Education Series.
  24. How do I pay for my registration? Can I just send a post dated cheque?
    We stopped accepting postdated cheques two years ago. Members may pay their fees by cheque, money order, Visa or MasterCard. If paying in person at the CRNM office, a debit card (Interac) or cash may be used.

    Postdated cheques will be returned and may result in a delay of your application processing. Any cheque returned due to non-payment will result in a $52.50 (tax included) service charge.
  25. How does this pre-authorized chequing work?
    Members already enrolled in the pre-authorized chequing (PAC) plan in 2009 have been pre-paying their 2010 registration fee. Members enrolled in PAC remain enrolled until such time as they advise CRNM in writing that they wish to terminate their participation. It is not necessary to reapply each year for the PAC program. Existing PAC members should not send a cheque or credit card information along with their renewal application as they have already prepaid their 2010 registration fee.

    Members not currently enrolled in PAC who wish to enroll for the 2011 registration year should fill out a PAC application form on or before Jan. 15, 2010. The PAC application form is available to download here or from the College.
