Practice Expectation Spotlight: Health Equity and Cultural Humility Module
Each year, registrants complete a jurisprudence module in order to demonstrate Continuing Competency requirements as outlined in the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba General Regulation. Jurisprudence, by definition, is the study of the law. The College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (College) is committed to selecting topics that have the most potential to maximize benefit for the public.
We are very excited to let you know that this year’s jurisprudence module is titled Health Equity and Cultural Humility. This module is now available and is a requirement to renew your certificate of practice for 2024.
The module was developed in collaboration with 16 provincial health regulatory colleges that are part of the Manitoba Alliance of Health Regulatory Colleges to support awareness and knowledge of health inequity.
The participating colleges sourced subject matter experts to develop the content for the module. A working group was formed that consisted of both regulators and a panel of subject matter experts including an equity, diversity, and inclusion specialist and an Indigenous elder, health care professional, and cultural safety trainer.
The College is committed to working together with Indigenous Knowledge Keepers, Elders and community members to advance reconciliation, cultural safety and humility in registered nursing regulation and practice. While we are early in this journey, we dedicate ourselves to engaging respectfully and in a spirit of partnership
Learning Module Goal
The goal of this learning module is to enhance your awareness and understanding of health inequities and cultural humility by introducing and defining new words, phrases, and concepts in context. The module will encourage you to reflect on your own unconscious biases as a means of improving the delivery of care across many patient populations. Finally—as this topic relates to regulations, standards of practice, and your professional codes of ethics—the module clarifies professional expectations for addressing disparities in health equity through equity-oriented practice.
