2018 AGM Highlights

RNs voted to approve new bylaws at our AGM on June 8, 2018. Here are the changes you need to know about:

1. Terminology

  • Board of Directors becomes ‘council’
  • Registers become ‘subregisters’ and ‘membership classes’

2. Titles

  • President becomes ‘chair’
  • President-elect becomes ‘chair-elect’
  • Executive director becomes ‘chief executive officer (CEO)/registrar’

3. Health Profession Corporations

The introduction of health profession corporations is new under the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA). This allows for individuals within the same regulated health profession to carry on the practice of that profession through a health profession corporation. We will issue permits and are responsible for maintaining a public database of valid permits.

4. Renewal period

The renewal period has not changed (Oct. 1 through Dec. 1 annually) but it is now noted in legislation.

5. Fees

Under the RHPA, RNs no longer vote on fees. This was always inherently a conflict of interest, similar to Manitoba drivers voting on Autopac fees.

6. Eligibility

Previously, only RNs were eligible to hold the positions of president and executive director. Now these positions can be held by RNs and are also open to non-RNs. The chair (president) position is open to anyone on council (board of directors) and the CEO/registrar (executive director) position is open to anyone who is the best fit to lead the College’s operations.
