Nursing in a Team Environment

April 23, 2020

The Colleges of Licensed Practical Nurses, Registered Nurses, and Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Manitoba are pleased to release a new, jointly-developed resource document, Nursing in a Team Environment. We frequently receive questions about how to best understand the roles of licensed practical nurses (LPN), registered nurses (RN) and registered psychiatric nurses (RPN) in a specific practice setting. With that in mind, we set out to provide a common framework for this discussion through the consideration of several factors that underpin effective collaboration between health care professionals including the client.

We challenged ourselves to look at the complexities of nursing and health care today and into the future. When viewed from this lens, it became clear that we had traditionally described scope of practice as a delineation between nurses at the individual level and between the individual professions. As the system and practice has evolved and continues to evolve it was imperative to examine how best to discuss scope of practice in a meaningful and modern way.

Thinking about bringing together a group of highly competent professionals to work as individuals who function within their own scopes became a limiting way to think about intra- and interprofessional care delivery. In order to provide the information required to make decisions about how to best serve patient population needs we had to move past the individualist perspective into a collectivist view. This document is meant to build a foundation that allows for reflective questioning and consideration and helps to support collaborative approaches to quality care.

We look forward to continuing this journey with all of you as we work to protect and serve the public interest through effective nursing regulation.

Sincerely,
