Practice Expectation Spotlight

What is Continuing Competency?

The Canadian Nurses Association believe the following:

Continuing competence is the ongoing ability of a nurse to integrate and apply the knowledge, skills, judgment and personal attributes required to practice safely and ethically in a designated role and setting.

Enhancing continuing competence through lifelong learning is essential to professional nursing practice because it contributes to the quality of patient outcomes and to the evidence base for nursing practice.

Why does the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM) have a Continuing Competency Program?

Under the Regulated Health Professions Act, the college is required to have a continuing competency program for registered nurses that promotes high standards of knowledge, skill and ethical practice. The program is an opportunity for registrants to reflect on their nursing practice and lead their own learning.

How do I participate?

Download or print this years’ Continuing Competency Program forms and complete your self-assessment. Once you have completed your self- assessment, you should create your self-development plan by:

  • identifying a learning opportunity
  • documenting a self-directed learning goal using SMART principles
  • completing at least one learning activity
  • documenting your impact to practice (maximum of 500 words)

What happens during my certificate of practice renewal?

During your certificate of practice renewal you will be asked if you have completed Part A and Part B of the 2021 Continuing Competency Program forms. Completion includes documentation of your impact on practice statement related to your self-directed learning goal and activity completed between December 1st, 2020 and December 1st, 2021.  If you have, you will enter yes. If you respond no, you will be directed to review information related to continuing competency program exceptions.

Did you know?

The Continuing Competency Program is managed by members of the College’s Quality Practice Team. The college keeps all information about a registered nurses continuing competency confidential. The registrant can choose to share this information with their employer if they wish.  While the program is a requirement under legislation, it’s also intended to support registrants in their professional development and commitment to lifelong learning. The team is here to support registrants as they complete the program. There are specific resources dedicated to information related to the program you can read here . The team also provides virtual presentations to those interested. Of course, a registrant can also arrange to meet with a team member if you have questions or would like further information related to your self-development plan. The team may be reached at ccp@crnm.mb.ca.
