Overview
What are practice expectations?
RNs in Manitoba are expected to meet the nursing practice expectations. Whether you are an RN, RN(AP), or RN(NP), these are expected and achievable levels of registered nursing practice and are approved by the College’s council.
Areas covered in the practice expectations include professional practice, communication, ethics, client-centred practice, collaborative care, and more.
How are they established?
The College has the legislated authority through the RHPA to establish practice expectations in order to protect the public. These expectations are approved by our council and describe how an RN is to practise, at a minimum. It’s your responsibility to understand these standards and be accountable to apply them to your own nursing practice, regardless of your role or setting.

Competencies for RNs in Manitoba
Entry-level competencies describe the competencies required for entry-level RNs to provide safe, competent, compassionate and ethical nursing care in a variety of practice settings. They also serve as a guide for curriculum development and for public and employer awareness of the practice expectations of entry-level RNs.
The competencies are client-centred, futuristic and incorporate new developments in society, health care, nursing knowledge and nursing practice. They aim to ensure that entry-level RNs can function in today’s realities and are well-equipped with the knowledge and skills to adapt to changes in health care and nursing.
The Code of Ethical Conduct
The Code of Ethical Conduct, referred to as the Code, is a foundational document for registered nursing practice in Manitoba and is how registrants maintain trustworthiness with clients and the public. The Code aligns with contemporary nursing practices, emphasizing respect for client autonomy, maintaining confidentiality, and promoting safe, equitable care. It specifically addresses anti-racism and cultural competency as they relate to both clients and healthcare team members, reflecting the diversity of the nursing workforce and the populations served. Incorporating psychological safety, mentorship, and supportive work environments is essential for interprofessional collaboration and working effectively with multi-professional healthcare teams. All registrants are expected to uphold these principles in their nursing practice.
