A censure is a formal written reprimand issued by the Complaints Investigation Committee and acts as a record of its disapproval of a registrant’s professional conduct and/or practice deficiencies. Censures create a disciplinary record which may be considered or replied upon in the future by the Complaints Investigation Committee or Inquiry Committee when determining the action to be taken following an investigation or hearing.

While a censure does not restrict a nurse’s ability to practice, it remains a matter of public record. A censure indicates that the Complaints Investigation Committee found the registrant’s conduct sufficiently serious to warrant formal discipline and that a censure provides the necessary regulatory force to convey the seriousness of the registrant’s conduct, to protect the public and to act as a specific deterrent to the registrant, and as a general deterrence for other registered nurses.
