Medical Aesthetics
Overview
Medical aesthetic nursing is a dynamic and rapidly evolving area of practice within the self-employed nursing landscape. For example, medical aesthetics
- Embraces innovation, with new techniques, technologies, and emerging procedures.
- Leverages evidence-informed practice, often leading the way to use new evidence to support innovative procedures for clients.
- Bridges professional scopes, blending expertise from nursing, medicine, dermatology, and other allied health fields to deliver holistic, client-centered outcomes.
While the College’s Practice Expectations and Entry-Level Competencies provide a strong foundation for self-employed registrants, the evolving and dynamic nature of medical aesthetic nursing practice requires contextualizing these expectations.
To bridge this gap, the College has introduced additional supports and resources to help nurses better understand their professional expectations in this field, including guidance on what is considered registered nursing practice.
Considering a Career in Medical Aesthetic Nursing?
Nurses exploring a career in medical aesthetics must review the Practice Direction: Medical Aesthetics, which outlines the minimum expectations for safe, competent, and ethical nursing practice in this field. Additionally, the Medical Aesthetics: Procedural Listing provides important guidance by distinguishing between procedures that are registered nursing practice and those considered esthetic (non-nursing) activities.
If you are entering medical aesthetic practice as a self-employed nurse or independent contractor, you are required to complete both the Self-Employed Nursing Practice Declaration and the Medical Aesthetics Declaration Addendum. These documents help ensure regulatory accountability and support nurses in maintaining clear boundaries within their scope of practice.
