Why Is the Continuing Competency Program (CCP) Required?

Under the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA) of Manitoba, all regulated health professionals are required to participate in a Continuing Competency Program (CCP). This is a legal and professional obligation designed to protect the public and uphold the highest standards of care.

Purpose of the CCP

The CCP ensures that health professionals:

  • Maintain and enhance their competence throughout their careers.
  • Stay current with evolving best practices, technologies, and ethical standards.
  • Provide safe, effective, and ethical care to the public.
  • Engage in reflective practice and lifelong learning.

What the RHPA Requires

Section 87(1) of the RHPA mandates that each regulatory college must establish a CCP that:

  • Supports ongoing professional development.
  • Encourages self-assessment and goal setting.
  • Includes mechanisms for evaluating learning and its impact on practice.

What Nurses Must Do

Each year, all nurses are expected to:

  • Complete a self-assessment of their practice.
  • Develop and implement a learning plan.
  • Participate in jurisprudence education
  • Engage in peer and/or client feedback, when selected as part of the CCP Review.

By participating in the CCP, professionals demonstrate their commitment to excellence and accountability in healthcare.

Annual CCP Requirements: What You Need to Know

Begin Each Year with the Right Forms

Start your Continuing Competency Program (CCP) by downloading or printing Part A (Self-Assessment) and Part B (Learning Plan) of the appropriate CCP Forms. These must be completed before you submit your online renewal application, which is open from October 1 to December 1 each year.

During the renewal process, you will be asked to confirm whether you have completed both parts. Selecting “Yes” serves as your formal declaration that the forms are complete.

Note: If you register or reinstate after October 1, you are not required to complete the CCP forms for that year’s renewal. However, you will be expected to complete them in subsequent years.

Complete the Jurisprudence Module

Before renewing your registration, ensure you have completed the required Jurisprudence Module. You can access it by logging into your CRNM Profile.

See here for information about jurisprudence.
